Mathematics

At CGS we work together in the interests of all pupils to create a stimulating mathematical environment that generates enthusiasm amongst our students and provides a positive and enjoyable experience for all.

Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving and number skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways.

Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment, science and technology, medicine, the economy, the environment and development, and in public decision-making.

Different cultures have contributed to the development and application of Mathematics. Today, the subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised.

Mathematics is a creative discipline. It can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder when a pupil solves a problem for the first time, discovers a more elegant solution to that problem, or suddenly sees hidden connections.

Our Aims

To ensure that each pupil realises her full potential in Mathematics by employing a variety of teaching strategies and resources which will enable us to provide a balanced mathematical education.

To ensure that each pupil develops confidence in her mathematical ability and can apply their mathematical skills as appropriate in different contexts.

To work together in the interests of all pupils to create a stimulating mathematical environment that generates enthusiasm amongst our students and provides a positive and enjoyable experience for all.

Sixth Form

Why study Mathematics?

As well as being satisfying in its own right, Mathematics can open the door to a wide range of careers. It is a useful tool for study in very many fields. Mathematics in the Sixth Form can reasonably be studied with almost any combination of subjects. If you are interested in pursuing particular courses, such as Engineering or Physics, you should be seriously considering Mathematics to A Level.

Future Pathways

Mathematics underpins areas of academic study and business which are seen as central to the country’s economic future. Mathematics skills are vital to students of the physical sciences and engineering, and increasingly important in social and medical sciences. Skilled, well-paid jobs (especially in the financial services and ICT sectors) often demand highlevel Mathematics skills. We cater for students who want to study Mathematics at university with recent girls going onto study Mathematics at UCL, Edinburgh and Bristol. We also support students including medics securing their place at University.
